IELTS Writing Task 2 Word Count: Plan Beyond the Minimum

Task 2 requires at least 250 words. Reaching that number matters, but a successful response also needs a direct position, developed ideas, logical paragraphs and accurate language.

Treat 250 words as a floor

The minimum word count is not a target to pad with repetition. A short response can make it difficult to develop an argument, give relevant support and show a range of language.

Instead, use the number as a quick check after drafting. If you are far below it, look for an underdeveloped explanation or missing example rather than adding filler.

Give each paragraph a job

A practical Task 2 structure is an introduction, two developed body paragraphs and a conclusion. Each body paragraph should make one main point, explain why it matters and support it with a relevant illustration.

This structure helps a reader follow your position. It also makes revision easier because you can test whether every sentence contributes to one clear idea.

  • Introduction: answer the question and preview the direction.
  • Body paragraphs: one claim, explanation, support and link back.
  • Conclusion: restate the position without introducing a new argument.

Revise for precision

After the draft reaches the minimum, revise for relevance. Remove repeated ideas, vague intensifiers and examples that do not support the paragraph claim.

The Writing Checker can flag length and structural signals, but it cannot decide whether an idea answers the exact question. Read the prompt again before you submit a practice response.
